At DART Partnership, we believe that community transport is about far more than getting from A to B. It’s about connection, dignity, and making sure no one feels left behind, especially in our most rural areas.
As part of Loneliness Awareness Week, we’re shining a spotlight on a fantastic local initiative we were proud to support last week: the Plough On project.
What is Plough On?
Plough On is a community-based programme that tackles rural isolation by creating social opportunities for older men and women from farming backgrounds. It’s designed for those who have spent much of their lives dedicated to the land — often in solitary and physically demanding work and who may now find themselves facing retirement or reduced roles with little social interaction.
For many, farming isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. Early mornings, long days, year-round commitment, and a deep connection to land, animals, and community. But stepping away from that world can be incredibly difficult. The shift can bring not just a change in routine, but a deep sense of loss, loneliness, and disconnection.
That’s where Plough On makes such a difference.
More Than Just a Group — A Lifeline
The programme brings people together to share stories, reconnect with old friends, learn new skills, and enjoy simple, meaningful social time in a safe and welcoming environment. It might be a cuppa and a chat, a farm visit, or an activity session, but the real value lies in being seen, being heard, and belonging.
Last week, DART had the privilege of providing transport for a local Plough On group outing. For many of the participants, it was more than just a day out it was a chance to laugh, reminisce, and feel part of something.
Why It Matters
Loneliness isn’t always visible and in rural areas, it’s easy to feel cut off — especially for older people with limited mobility or few transport options. Projects like Plough On are vital, not just for wellbeing, but for dignity, identity, and mental health.
We’re proud to stand alongside initiatives like this that champion the voices of rural residents and remind us that everyone deserves connection, no matter their age, background, or postcode.
How DART Helps
As a community transport provider, DART doesn’t just provide lifts — we provide access to life: to hospital appointments, shopping, support services, and, just as importantly, to social connection. Together, we can reduce isolation and build stronger, more inclusive communities.
If you or someone you know would benefit from community transport or wants to get involved with rural programmes like Plough On, we’d love to hear from you.
Because no one should feel left behind — especially those who have spent a lifetime helping to build the communities we all call home.
