Safeguarding at DART – Keeping Our Passengers Safe, Supported and Respected

At DART, safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do.

As a community transport organisation, we work closely with vulnerable adults and people who may be at risk for a variety of reasons. Every journey we provide is about more than transport, it is about ensuring our passengers feel safe, respected, supported and valued at all times.

Recently, our team took part in updated safeguarding training to refresh our knowledge and strengthen our understanding of best practice when supporting adults at risk in our community. Safeguarding is something that can never stand still. Guidance changes, awareness grows, and it is vital that organisations like ours continue learning so we can provide the highest standards of care and protection.

Who Safeguarding Protects

Adult safeguarding is about protecting adults who may be unable to protect themselves from harm, abuse, neglect or exploitation.

This includes people who may:

  • Have physical or learning disabilities

  • Experience mental ill-health

  • Be living with dementia or cognitive impairment

  • Have sensory impairments

  • Be isolated or socially vulnerable

  • Depend on others for care and support

  • Experience illness, frailty or reduced mobility

  • Be affected by financial abuse, coercion or neglect

Many of the passengers we support through our community transport services may face one or more of these challenges. This means safeguarding awareness is essential for every member of the DART team.

Why Safeguarding Training Matters

Our recent safeguarding session helped refresh our understanding of:

  • Recognising signs of abuse or neglect

  • Understanding different forms of harm, including physical, emotional, financial and psychological abuse

  • Knowing how to report concerns appropriately

  • Maintaining professional boundaries

  • Supporting passengers with dignity and respect

  • Creating safe environments where people feel listened to and protected

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Even small actions, checking on a passenger’s wellbeing, noticing changes in behaviour, or ensuring someone feels comfortable during a journey, can make a significant difference.

Keeping our knowledge up to date helps ensure we respond confidently, professionally and compassionately whenever concerns arise.

Community Transport That Cares

Our drivers and volunteers play an incredibly important role within the community. For many passengers, DART services provide not only transport, but also reassurance, independence and social connection.

Our team strives every day to ensure passengers:

  • Feel safe while travelling

  • Are treated with kindness and dignity

  • Receive support when needed

  • Feel comfortable and respected

  • Can travel with confidence and independence

We are proud of the care, patience and professionalism shown by our drivers and staff. Their commitment helps create a welcoming environment where passengers know they are in safe hands.

Continuing Our Commitment

Safeguarding is not simply a policy or a training session it is an ongoing commitment.

At DART, we will continue investing in training, awareness and best practice to ensure the people who rely on our services remain protected, supported and empowered.

By working together, staying informed and always putting people first, we can continue building a transport service that our community trusts.

Because everyone deserves to feel safe and to know they matter.
