A small journey that meant so much.

This week, we supported a lady living with dementia on her first journey with DART Community Transport and it’s one we won’t forget.

Before the journey, we carried out a thorough risk assessment with her family, taking time to understand what would help her feel safe and comfortable. We learned that she can feel unsettled by unfamiliar environments, prefers reassurance, and doesn’t like bumps in the road but that country music helps her relax.

With that in mind, our team planned carefully: A smooth, steady journey, music to help keep her calm. Reassurance and gentle support throughout

Her daughter followed behind on her first journey, helping her on board and ensuring she felt secure.

What made the biggest difference, though, was the kindness shown by our drivers.

We received this feedback from her daughter following the trip:“They were absolutely amazing – so, so good with her, so polite, so nice. They acknowledged her and took the time to chat with her. I couldn’t get over it… a lot of people don’t always acknowledge her, but the way they treated her was unbelievable.”

Moments like this remind us that community transport is about so much more than getting from A to B. It’s about dignity, connection, and care.
